Over the weekend Michael Phelps proved he can swim with the sharks by making a final table in a preliminary event at the Caesar's Palace Classic. He finished ninth out of 187 entrants in Sunday's $1,570 buy-in tournament and earned $5,213 for his efforts. When he was introduced to the crowd Phelps was presented with a gold Caesars Palace medallion by the poker room staff.

The liberal poker media elite are beside themselves with the news. Here's an interview today from CardPlayer:
In related news, the World Poker Tour's Festa al Lago main event started today at the Bellagio and Michael swam across the fountain just to get to the Fontana Lounge. JK. Though he didn't play Day 1a of the tournament he can still enter tomorrow.
According to the WPT Live Updates Blog: "As Phelps walked around the room, famous poker players eagerly got out of their seats to just shake his hand. Phil Hellmuth was sort of his unofficial escort, introducing him to the players. Doyle Brunson, Jennifer Harman, Johnny Chan, Carlos Mortensen, J.C. Tran, Layne Flack, Freddy Deeb and many more all stopped to talk with him or take photos."

The Las Vegas Review Journal says "he's letting it be known he wants to play in the World Series of Poker."
